Let's ride between the sardinian coast and its hinterland to discover one of the most ancient and mysterious lands in the Mediterranean sea. Welcome to Sardinia!
In this 7-day tour departing from Alghero we will head south crossing one of the most beautiful and renowned coastal roads on the island: the Road 105. Along the high cliffs peaking over the sea, you can enjoy the thousand shades of blue and the changing landscapes leading towards the colorful town of Bosa. From here, you will ride up to the city of Alghero, along the Sardinian hinterland full of twisty roads and meadows.
But this will not be just a journey involving charming landscapes; you can visit, taste and experience the different historical regions of Northern Sardinia, staying in the small characteristic villages and discovering their immense cultural heritage.
From Planargia to Meilogu, passing through Montiferru and Marghine, are you ready to discover this little "continent" that we call Sardinia? Go!
What you will do:
Welcome to Sardinia! At your arrival you can opt for reaching Alghero on your own or to book a private transfer with us. Enjoy the Spanish atmosphere of the small "Sardinian Barceloneta" by staying in one of our selected Bike Hotels. You just have to choose the one that best suits your needs: Country resort ****, Hotel Alma***, Hotel Angedras ***.
Among the high cliffs peaking over the sea, tiny rocky bays and ancient watchtowers, your trip from Alghero to Bosa will make you feel as you are on a roller coaster on the Mediterranean sea! Rare birds, like griffon vultures, can often be seen roosting along the cliffs. You will head West cycling in one of the most scenic paved roads in Europe. Did you know that due to its peculiar conformation it was once a nominee for UNESCO heritage? Also called the "City of colors", Bosa conquer you just by observing it from afar, before crossing the bridge at the entrance to the historic centre. Many small colored houses, tumbled down on the hill, frame the ancient Malaspina Castle which can be seen on the top of the town, while below there branch off a network of narrow alleys and stairways with a suggestive and slightly damp appearance, given by the presence of the river I fear that divides the city in two. The Temo is the only navigable river in all of Sardinia. Check-in and overnight at Al Gabbiano*** Hotel
Enjoy a generous breakfast and get ready to ride in the Sardinian hinterland. If in the previous days we rode coast to coast on the charming panoramic road 105, today the landscape will completely change: meadows and cork oaks will show you natural tracks that will lead you to the center of Sardinia. This will be an unforgettable experience for sure. From Bosa, you'll cross the heart of Planargia until the suggestive village of Santu Lussurgiu. But first you can take a layover in the San Leonardo di Siete Fuentes Park. Here you can enjoy your snack and refresh yourself by sipping the mineral water directly from the springs inside the Park - one of the most popular drinking water on the island. It is produced and bottled in Sardinia, you can purchase it in the local markets! Check-in and overnight at Antica Dimora del Gruccione.
You will go up towards Macomer following a provincial road and crossing the historical region of Marghine. Our partner Esedra Escursioni manages various sites and museums in this area, such as the Tamuli Archaeological Park about 4 km from Macomer. By buying a ticket, you can take a tour inside the park to visit the remains of three Giants' Tombs, and discover the peculiarity of the six sacred conical stones known as "Sas Perdas Marmuradas". Before reaching Macomer, you can take a layover to feel the sacredness of this site dated back to the Bronze Age. At the end of your regenerating break, hit the road back to Macomer... but be careful, you may bump into seasonal grazing at work! In fact, Marghine is an historical region grounded in meadows and agricultural production. You are now visiting one of the most important Pecorino cheese districts in Sardinia. Check-in and overnight at Hotel Marghine.
You'll leave the quiet meadows of Marghine to enter a completely different landscape. You'll start to back up North to reach the charming natural reserve of Monte Minerva, one of the most beautiful of the Island thanks to its secular reverelle wood. Before reaching the historical region of Villanova, we will stretch the route to take a layover in the historical region of Meilogu and visit the famous and amazing archaeological site of Necropoli di Sant'Andrea Priu. Are you ready? The climb will be challenging, but don't you worry... it will be worth it! Once you reach the top of Monte Minerva, you will find a small oasis of relax: the Locanda Minerva. Here you can spend the night and also opt to add a dinner to your tour. Check-In and overnigh stay at Locanda Minerva***.
And if on the first leg of this journey you took the coastal road to enjoy the beautiful panoramas overlooking the sea, for the return you can switch to an internal route with a completely different landscape. We will descend from Monte Minerva on the way of Montresta, avoiding slopes that could be too steep. We will cross roads full of vegetation and fertile fields following sinuous curves until we catch the sea in the distance once we are close to Alghero. We'll arrive at our destination at the end of the morning. So, if you need it, take a layover along the way by using one of the many rest areas. Check-in and overnight stay in Alghero at one of our Bike Hotels partners: Country resort ****, Hotel Alma***, Hotel Angedras ***.
We have reached the end of this exciting tour discovering the historical regions of Northern Sardinia. All that remains is to go to the airport. You can decide to reach it on your own or book a private transfer with one of our partners. In that case, we will take care of everything! We thank you for choosing us and we look forward to seeing you again for your next bike tour here in Sardinia!
