Part of *I Borghi Più Belli d'Italia* (The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy), La Maddalena is a town of about 10,000 inhabitants that includes, in addition to the main island, a distinctive archipelago made up of Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria, and Razzoli.
The natural wonders of the archipelago are diverse and of immense value, which is why it has been designated a National Park and is fully protected. One example is Budelli’s famous Pink Beach, a unique natural monument. For years it has been closed to the public because its pink sand—long targeted by curious visitors—began to disappear. Today, to allow it to regenerate, the beach can only be admired from a distance.
La Maddalena is also rich in history. Did you know that Giuseppe Garibaldi lived and died here? He was an Italian general, patriot, leader, writer, sailor, and politician—one of the most important and celebrated figures of the Risorgimento. Known as the “hero of two worlds,” he earned this title for his military achievements in both Europe and South America.
